Well-being is more than simply the opposite of mental illness; in
fact, it is the antidote. A person suffering from mental illness
or emotional distress may become disconnected from his/her well-being,
but the fact remains that well-being can never be lost or damaged.
Well-being is an inborn and inalienable human resource.
Every person has the ability to access his/her
own well-being at any moment, regardless of his/her circumstances.
Our method of treatment involves helping our clients realize their
well-being and understand how it becomes obscured. As a result,
the client discovers a higher quality of life that provides a stronger
immunity to psychological distress.
Mental illness and suffering take many forms,
exist with varying degrees of intensity, and appear to have various
causes. The factors and the length of time people
have suffered a mental illness do not affect their ability to find
their well-being nor do they affect his/her ability to live a happy
and productive life.
Frequently Asked Questions
I've been to counseling before, how is this different?
Our approach to counseling takes a very different direction from
the traditional counseling field with regards to the format, the
process, and our overall philosophy of mental health. Our standard
format consists of a four-day mental health program that is comprehensive,
that is it typically has a profound impact on all areas of the client's
life as opposed to simply working through certain specified issues.
We operate under the assumption that people have the most clarity,
perspective, and the sharpest learning curve when they are relaxed,
emotionally secure, and their minds are free. As a result we designed
the format and process of our programs in a way that raises the
client's overall level of well-being throughout the program. We
do not take clients into their pasts nor do we teach people to control
or manage their thinking, feelings, or behavior, as we feel neither
of these processes ultimately impacts a person's overall peace of
mind. We use an educational approach to the counseling process through
which we teach people about the power behind human psychological
functioning, giving them the understanding that enables them to
live their lives with more contentment, greater connection to others,
and less struggle in the face of adversity.
Apart from the format and process of our programs,
perhaps the most fundamental difference between our approach and
other modes of counseling is our philosophy toward our clients.
We operate from a health-based orientation to human psychological
functioning, which is in contrast to the illness-based orientation
that dominates the mental health field. We believe people are born
with their mental health completely intact and that they never lose
the ability to realize peace of mind, regardless of factors such
as external circumstance, past events, genetics, or personality.
What is the format of your programs?
We have the ability to design custom programs for people depending
upon their particular needs, however a majority of our clients are
ideally suited for our 4-day Intensive program. This program is
conducted in a one-on-one setting. The client meets with the counselor
for ninety-minute sessions twice a day for four days. The format
of the program is designed to allow for ample time during the breaks
for the client to reflect upon and absorb the content of the sessions
and to review any assigned materials.
What kind of results can be achieved in 4 days?
The success of our programs depends on our ability to help people
find their well-being. Well-being is at people's core and is merely
shaded or obscured by distress. It has been our experience that
profound results occur when people are able to gain some distance
from the thinking that causes them the distress. In the majority
of cases we have found that four days is adequate in helping people
do this, allowing them to mentally "reset" and gain the
insight they need to find their peace of mind.
Will the results last?
The objective of our programs is for people to experience their
own potential for well-being. This will not eliminate the ups and
downs of life but will reduce the degree to which people tend to
be negatively affected by them. We teach people what they need to
know in order to find not just contentment and well-being, but also
the clarity and wisdom to resolve their own issues. Once our clients
discover the resources that live within them, they are able to navigate
themselves through the adversities they face in the future.
Someone I care about really needs help but
is resistant to the idea of going to counseling. How can I get them
the help they need?
Nine times out of ten a person is resistant to counseling because
in the past the counseling field had earned a reputation for a therapy
process that was upsetting, awkward, invasive, or "touchy-feely."
Our best advice when helping others is to be respectful and understanding
and encourage your friend or family member to call us or visit our
website. Once a person finds out about our philosophy and approach
to helping people, they tend to be much less resistant to the idea
of counseling and often become hopeful at the possibility of finding
relief from their struggles.
This sounds great, what's the next step?
We have eight counselors on staff so we can typically accommodate
people during the time they have available. Please contact us to
schedule dates and ask any questions you may have. We will assist
you in arranging your accommodations and any other logistics that
may be involved.
I've been troubled for a long time. Will it
take me a long time to get better?
There does not seem to be a direct relationship between how long
a person has struggled or the degree to which they are struggling
and how quickly they transcend that struggle and find their well-being.
We have found very few cases that have not been able to be affected
or turned around in four days. However, our results with people
are related to a person's willingness, however slight, to learning
and seeking some help.
